Hercules police announce DUI checkpoint

The Pinole and Hercules police departments have been awarded state grants to help reduce dangerous driving and improve safety on local roads.

The Pinole Police Department received a $50,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to support traffic enforcement and education through September 2026. Programs will include DUI checkpoints and patrols for impaired drivers, high-visibility enforcement of California’s hands-free cell phone law, and targeting top crash causes like speeding and running stop signs. The grant also funds community traffic safety presentations and additional officer training.

Nearby in Hercules, the police department accepted a $75,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant to support enforcement efforts focused on impaired and distracted driving, pedestrian safety, seatbelt use and speed laws. Hercules officers will use the grant for DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols and other enforcement operations, along with community education on safe driving. The department has previously used STEP funds for tools like electronic citation writers and a speed trailer.
