Over 5,000 citations have been issued since citywide street sweeping enforcement officially began on April 15, Richmond police Lt. Donovan Decious reported at the Richmond Neighborhood Coordinating Council (RNCC) meeting on May 12.

That total includes both street sweeping and various other parking infractions noted by six parking enforcement officers who are actively patrolling the city, Lt. Decious said.
“We do have a lot of concerned community members who either weren’t notified or didn’t know that we are starting,” he said, adding that the city is working through ensuring signage exists and are readable.
Street sweeping enforcement was paused in Richmond during the COVID-19 pandemic. The effort to resume enforcement aims to enable street sweepers to adequately clean streets and prevent debris from ending up in storm drains and waterways. Earlier this year, the city installed 1,330 new street sweeping signs as part of the new enforcement effort and distributed warning notices about the enforcement in the community.
