Pinole Valley High School went into lockdown Monday after a report that a student had a gun.

Police officers and school staff quickly found the student and took them into custody without any trouble. When officers searched the student’s backpack, they found a firearm that appeared to be made with a 3D printer.

These types of homemade weapons are often called ghost guns. Even if they are 3D-printed or not fully finished, they are still considered illegal firearms under California law, police said. Because this technology is becoming more common, it is easier for people to make untraceable weapon parts at home, which creates new safety risks for the public.

The police stated there is no ongoing threat to the school community. The case is now being reviewed by the legal system. Authorities praised the student who reported the weapon and are asking parents to talk to their children about the serious legal trouble and safety risks that come with possessing weapons or using technology to make them.
