A graduation ceremony next month will celebrate 15 Richmond residents who earned GEDs and high school diplomas as part of the Richmond Public Library’s long-running Literacy for Every Adult Program (LEAP).

The Class of 2024 will be honored from 3-5 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Richmond Memorial Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza.

“The graduation ceremony will honor the perseverance and dedication of these individuals, who have overcome numerous obstacles to reach this significant milestone,” Library officials said.

That includes Daymishanique “Mimi” Turner, who will serve as student speaker at the ceremony.

Kate Eppler, deputy director of Community Services for the Richmond Public Library, will serve as keynote speaker.

The event is also an opportunity to acknowledge the support of this program from the City of Richmond, City Council, the Richmond community, and partners including California Library Literacy Services, a program of the California State Library.

LEAP is a free program sponsored by the Richmond Public Library that pairs tutors with learners in one-on-one or small group settings. The program started at the Library in 1984 as an adult-literacy program. Since then, Richmond residents enroll for a variety of purposes, not just to improve basic reading and writing skills, but also for GED preparation, English as a second language skills and to enhance math and computer literacy.
