Elder Hernandez, owner of La Lupita Mexican Eatery in Richmond’s Marina Bay neighborhood, has a message for his customers: “Thank you.”

Many restaurants are either struggling or closing due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. While business has slowed at Hernandez’s family-run eatery at 2167 Meeker Ave., loyal customers have kept them cooking. The ability to offer takeout and delivery has helped.

“I like cooking for the community,” said Hernandez, who runs Lupita with his wife Elsia Figueroa and brother, Misael Gutierrez. “My customers are very important to me. We cook fresh food that is healthy and we take great pride in that.”

The restaurant serving authentic Mexican classics — such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, nachos, and grilled chorizo, to name a few — opened in 2018, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner options, including vegetarian and seafood dishes. Since opening, the eatery has garnered positive online reviews, perhaps a reason for its loyal customer base.

Hernandez raves about his fish filet of any style off the menu in spicy red sauce for $14.99. He also recommends the Super Nachos plate, with cheese, sauce, beans, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, jalapenos, and your choice of meat for $10.99.

“I just want to thank all of our customers support during these times of the pandemic,” Hernandez said.

La Lupita Mexican Eatery is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and on the weekend from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call (510) 680-5410.
