The West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) recently recognized two El Cerrito High baseball players who earned college scholarships: Matthew Barnes II and Demetriz ‘DJ’ Lewis.

Matthew committed to the University of California, Davis while DJ committed to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, according to the school district’s latest newsletter.

Former head baseball coach Kayden Paysinger spoke about their achievements at a recent college signing event, saying he’s seen “nothing but big and positive things from these two young men” since they were freshmen.

“They have been leaders outside in the community as well as in the classroom,” Paysinger said.

During the singing event, the boys’ families credited their hard work and dedication for their success. WCCUSD Superintendent Dr. Kenneth C. Hurst lauded both for balancing their rigorous training schedule while maintaining “excellent academic standing.”

“The school administration is proud of their achievements and congratulates them on their scholarship commitments,” Hurst said. “As they embark on the next chapter of their journey as student-athletes, we wish them all the best.”
