The Richmond Police Department (RPD) and the local community are in mourning following the unexpected death of Motor Officer Jonathan “Jon” Platzner, who suffered a medical emergency while off duty.

A member of the RPD since 2012, Officer Platzner was described by colleagues as someone who “demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to the safety of our community.”

He also served in the Marine Corps from 1988-1992 including a combat tour during the first Gulf War.

Over the years he’s done everything from crack down on speeding cars to chasing after armed suspects. He was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) over a half-dozen times for keeping streets safe by taking intoxicated drivers off the road.

In the community, he was remembered as a warm, loving presence. In the headline photo used in this story, taken last year, the officer is captured giving a young girl a toy that was stored in his bike compartment after she took interest in his team’s police equipment.

Michelle Denise Milam, crime prevention manager for the City of Richmond, posted that she will miss Officer Platzner’s  “sweet smile and kindness.”

“You were one of a kind,” Milam said. “I hope when you get to the other side God says ‘Good morning.'”

The Antioch Herald reported that Richmond police held a procession with the help of Antioch police as his body was transported from Sutter Delta Medical Center Friday afternoon.

“His loss is deeply felt by his fellow officers, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him,” the RPD stated.
