El Tapatio at 910 23rd St. in Richmond serves up “burritos so good they should have their own Instagram account” and “the best molcajete you’ll ever taste,” according to the national publication Family Destinations Guide.

The molcajete is a traditional Mexican dish presented in a heated volcanic stone bowl. It is “food as performance art,” states Family Destinations Guide writer Emily Appelbaum. El Tapatio’s version of the dish delivers “a flavor explosion that lives up to its dramatic entrance,” Appelbaum adds.

In a separate article, the writer describes El Tapatio’s burritos as “architectural marvels – substantial cylinders wrapped in foil that require two hands and a serious commitment.” The tortillas are described as fresh, pliable and warmed to perfection, with flavorful meats and beans boasting “complex flavor.” Further, the rice was described as “fluffy and flavorful.”

Beyond the food, Family Destinations Guide lauds El Tapatio for its warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional hacienda.

“El Tapatio isn’t just another taqueria – it’s an institution wrapped in a flour tortilla, smothered in authentic flavors, and served with a side of East Bay pride,” the writer states.
