On any given day, 18-year-old recent high school graduate, Hostin C., could be spotted riding his red, Sunday Blueprint bike on Dirt World Bike Park’s rollers, pump track jumps and launch ramps.

That is, until he recently crashed at the BMX bike park and broke his right femur. An ambulance raced him to Kaiser Permanente Richmond Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to implant a rod in his upper leg.

As the dust settles from his accident, a hard truth remains: Hostin doesn’t have health insurance, and along with recovering from his injury, he “is highly stressed about the crushing medical bills” associated with his medical procedure, according to a GoFundMe page established by John Wold to support him.

Wold painted a picture on the fundraising page of a local family under serious duress. Hostin is unable to work with this injury, and since it’s just his father and him, there’s juggling taking place by his dad to care for Hostin, while he also tries to work.

“His recovery will be long and he could use our help to pay down that bill and get him through this struggle,” said Wold on the GoFundMe page.

Wold also took time on the fundraising page to appeal to BMX/bike companies and related shops to reach out to him via the page if they can help support the young BMX rider during his time of need. “We’re looking to do other things to help raise additional funds,” he stated.

Dirt World is a free-to-use, two-acre, BMX bike park at 43 20th St. between 20th St. & Ohio Ave. in Richmond that underwent a $1.1 million revamp funded by a Prop 68 grant in the fall of 2024.

Hostin is a local at the bike park, according to Wold, who said “he rides and volunteers his time to maintain the jumps” there. To date, the fundraising page has raised $1,455 of an $11,000 goal.
