Richmond is looking into whether to replace its annual Independence Day fireworks show with drone light shows as way to reduce air and noise pollution.

Drone light shows have been trending globally as an eco-friendly option, particularly on the West Coast of the U.S. where wildfires are a problem, according to city documents. Drone light shows also reduce noise pollution that impacts people and their pets.

They are now used for Independence Day celebrations in other Bay Area cities including Brentwood and Redwood City.

Councilmember Soheila Bana asked city staff to investigate the feasibility of using drones instead of fireworks at Richmond’s annual celebration. Staff are expected to report preliminary findings at the next City Council meeting Tuesday. The preliminary analysis, posted in the agenda, shows a cost comparison between fireworks and drone shows.

Quotes for 20-minute-long fireworks shows range from $64,400 for launching from land and $103,185 for launching off a barge. Prices for drone shows vary by length of duration of the show and how many drones are used. Quotes listed from three possible drone show providers range from as low as $40-$80,000 for a 12-minute show using 200 drones, to $300,000 for an 11-minute experience involving 500 drones. Those quotes, however, do not include the cost for lodging and other expenses, such as music synchronization, city staff said.

“Drones can achieve a similar visual appeal while also reducing the risks associated with fireworks,” Bana’s agenda item states, adding that solar-powered generators could be used to power them.

At Tuesday’s meeting, City Council will be asked to discuss the possible switch and provide direction to city staff on how to move forward.
