An 8-hour police standoff in the 500 block of 2nd Street in Richmond ended at 3:47 p.m. today with the subject in custody and no one seriously injured, according to police.

Police initially responded to the scene at 7:41 a.m. today on a report of a person standing on the porch of a home on 2nd Street between Ripley and Barrett avenues waving a firearm at passersby.

While attempting to make contact with the subject, he entered and exited the home multiple times waving the firearm toward officers, according to police.

The subject was eventually detained. An initial police statement did not detail how the detainment occurred, stating only that he was in custody and that no serious injuries had occurred. A replica firearm was later recovered at the scene.

About an hour after police were called to the scene, the RPD activated the Community Warning System to alert residents in the immediate area to remain indoors. Homes in the vicinity were evacuated soon after.

Richmond police Chief Bisa French praised the work of the RPD officers for their restraint during the incident.

“As part of our post-incident protocols, we will ensure that the individual receives access to mental health resources,” the chief said.
