The Point Richmond Gallery is set to host an opening reception for late cartoonist and artist Joel Beck’s exhibition “WTF from Hell Holes to Hula Bears” Saturday, April 20 from 12-4 p.m.

Beck’s show is available for viewings on weekends from 1-4 p.m. through May 12th and also by appointment.

The exhibition features illustrations and renderings such as a sexy duck striking a pose, castles, creatures, balloon rides, a lady before a large fish’s open mouth, hula bears dancing on a beach and everything eccentric in-between. Get a sneak peek of the artwork here.

Beck honed his craft, in part, as a bedridden child suffering from spinal meningitis and tuberculosis, said the gallery. During his illnesses, which included years in a full body cast, he drew numerous illustrations and small comic books while in bed. He went on to publish the comic book, Lenny of Laredo, which was not only one of the ‘60s earliest underground comic books, but also the West Coast’s first underground comic book.

The Point Richmond Gallery is located at 145 West Richmond Ave. in Point Richmond. Questions? Contact [email protected] or (415) 286-6298.
