When was the last time you dined at Portumex?

The Mexican eatery is a longtime favorite of the Richmond community from its perch in the middle of the action at 721 23rd St. in Richmond.

Owner Omar Gonzalez offered a friendly ‘hello” during the Standard’s recent weekday visit, telling us that the restaurant’s enchiladas are their customers most ordered dish. Later, a patron concurred with the owner when we asked for his recommendations, giving an enthusiastic shout-out to Portumex’s chicken enchiladas, emphasizing that “the sauce is excellent.”

From its bright, yellow exterior on 23rd Street, Portumex offers its customers a robust menu of authentic and skillfully made Mexican dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. An array of quesadillas, nachos, tostadas, conchas, tortas, tacos, burritos, seafood and more selections are available, along with aqua frescas, wine, beer and many other drinks also on hand.

Patrons can order at Portumex’s register and find ample seating both indoors and out on a patio perfect for people-watching overlooking 23rd Street. The business was established in 1989 and has been under new ownership—with the same food—since 2019.

Portumex is closed on Mondays; its hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aside from restaurant service, it caters events. Questions? Call (510) 237-7513. Want delivery? Find Portumex on DoorDash and Grubhub too.
