When was the last time you went to Andy’s Donut Stop?

Richmond’s legendary destination for glazed gloriousness on 23rd Street was bustling with patrons during the Standard’s recent visit on a weekday morning.

Donuts are the name of the game at the shop, which has been serving the Richmond community since 1954, when original owners Alberta “Bertie” Heltsley and her late husband, Earl, first set it up. Today, Richmond’s legendary donut shop is owned by Randy Chow, and rest assured, the star pastries are still made fresh every day.

Chocolate, sugar and glazed donuts are top sellers, according to the owner, with patrons in line giving props to the cinnamon roll and donut holes. Another customer always orders one of Andy’s more traditional offerings, a breakfast sandwich, with her giving a shout-out to the menu’s #2: An English muffin, bacon, egg and cheese for $7.

This reporter picked up a handful of donuts to take home in Andy’s iconic pink and white striped box, including the ever-popular chocolate and glazed donuts, as well as a jelly and a pink one with rainbow sprinkles. My order was provided with extremely friendly service, and upon sharing them with my family, “heavenly” was the recurring word used to describe their collective deliciousness.

The shop has fully rebounded after undergoing repairs following a truck crashing into it in October 2023.

Andy’s Donut Stop is located at 971 23rd Street in Richmond, and it’s open from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The shop’s offerings are also available on DoorDash. Questions? Call (510) 232-6057. Learn more here.
