When was the last time you devoured a sandwich from The Artisan Café ?
On a recent Monday, amid the sun’s surprising winter appearance, the Standard stopped by the eatery at 865 Marina Bay Pkwy at lunchtime.
While many restaurants close on Mondays, the Marina Bay eatery was packed, both indoors and out on its European-style patio dotted with umbrella tables and succulents. The line at the register moved steadily, with the staff deftly preparing lunch orders.
This reporter couldn’t resist ordering my usual, familiar “Fave Thing”—the flavorful Fried Chicken Breast Sandwich topped with chipotle coleslaw—and while it was being crafted, I got busy chatting with my fellow patrons. The prevailing vibe was happiness, not just because people were likely appreciating a much-desired break from the rain, but also because they seemed to be in their happy place where the food is made with love.
A trio of girlfriends noshing inside told me they, too, are fans of the Café’s Fried Chicken Breast Sandwich, but also recommended the Tri Tip with caramelized onions, greens and caper-mayo on a torpedo roll; Fresh Crab Sandwich tossed in aioli sauce with lettuce, tomato and onion; and the Caesar Salad with roasted peppers, spicy pumpkin seeds, cherry tomato and shaved parmesan.
At the counter before a display of sweet treats, a Martinez couple looked bewildered about what to order. Never fear, I shared the lunch ladies and my own recommendations.

The Artisan Café is located at 865 Marina Bay Pkwy., #33, in Richmond’s Marina Bay neighborhood. Coffee and pastries are served starting at 10 a.m.; lunch is served at the Café Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until closing; and dinner is now offered Thursdays and Fridays from 5-7 p.m. Check the Café’s site for delivery services.
