The tasty transformation has occurred: A former Jack-in-the-Box on San Pablo Avenue in Richmond’s Annex neighborhood has transformed into the small but mighty second location of Masa.
Masa—the popular Mexican taqueria featuring homespun family recipes in Point Richmond—has expanded to add a new location at 10409 San Pablo Ave., nearby El Cerrito Natural Grocery. The new restaurant opened up two weeks ago, according to a Masa staffer.
The Richmond Annex location of Masa might be smaller, but it offers some desirable culinary punch: The great menu items community members have grown to love in addition to a convenient drive-through and ample umbrella tables on its beautiful outdoor patio.
Stand-out menu items from the original eatery appear on the new Masa’s menu too, including quesabirria, tacos and burritos—as well as a variety of handmade tamales that are the restaurants’ specialty. My family and I stopped by the new spot and—being very familiar with the original one—found the food (quesabirria and sweet corn tamales) to be deliciously consistent.
A contact at the original Masa said the new restaurant is in the Richmond Annex, although its address is listed as El Cerrito. It’s owned by Johnathan Bermudez, who opened up the original Masa in June 2020.
