Richmond Promise is inviting the community to join its annual celebration of college-bound “Scholars” at Civic Center Plaza on Saturday, June 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature performances by local artists, games, booths hosted by local colleges and universities, community resources and a food truck in a college quad-style atmosphere, according to Richmond Promise.

Richmond Promise works to build a culture of postsecondary success in the city by providing graduating seniors from Richmond and North Richmond with multi-year scholarships and wraparound services toward the pursuit of college degrees and career technical education certifications. Since launching in 2016 with a $35 million, 10-year investment from Chevron Richmond, the Promise has supported over 3,000 Richmond students in their higher educational pursuits.

The organization currently serves more than 1,900 scholars at over 200 colleges and universities across the U.S. The majority of scholars identify as people of color, first-generation college students and students from low-income backgrounds, according to Richmond Promise.

The June 3 event will mark the eighth year that Richmond Promise has hosted a Scholar Celebration, the organization’s largest event.

“Welcoming students and families back to Civic Center Plaza in 2022 was a huge success, and we are looking forward to joining with the Richmond community once again as we celebrate our newest cohort of Richmond Promise Scholars,” said Richmond Promise Executive Director Christopher Whitmore.  “The Scholar Celebration is a great example of the tremendous energy and enthusiasm that exists for building a culture of postsecondary success in Richmond. We are excited to celebrate our students’ accomplishments while also looking forward to supporting their journey that lies ahead.”
