Richmond event joins worldwide protest of conditions at U.S. southern border
Richmond Civic Center Plaza

This Friday across the world, roughly 700 Lights for Liberty events are scheduled to protest conditions facing immigrants seeking asylum at the U.S. southern border — and one will be held right here in Richmond.

Richmond’s Lights for Liberty event takes place from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Richmond Civic Center on Friday, July 12, according to sponsors that include Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia.

The event comes amid widespread reports of overcrowded, squalid conditions in border detention facilities. The event also comes amid a report from the New York Times reports today about rumored plans backed by the Trump Administration for ICE raids in at least 10 cities starting this Sunday, with the aim to deport thousands of undocumented immigrants.
