Some might be daunted at the prospect of launching a new restaurant amid a pandemic. But backed by 20 years of culinary experience—much of which has been spent as the head chef at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael—Chef Victor Viera swung open the doors to his new family-run Golden Gate Bistro Restaurant in early February. By all accounts, his confident move is paying off with a steady stream of loyal customers.

Located at 803 Wright Ave, Suite 101, in Richmond at the former home of the Golden Gate Grill, Golden Gate Bistro touts itself as “the perfect location for grabbing a delicious, healthy and quick breakfast or lunch on the go” due to its easy access to I-580 and other major thoroughfares like Harbour Way. Per the bistro, they look to partner with local businesses so that they can incorporate fresh and quality ingredients into their menu offerings.

The bistro, which specializes in breakfast and lunch fare, features Strawberry French Toast, Eggs Benedict, Assorted Pastries, Funnel Cake Fries and other offerings for breakfast and various hamburgers, Taco Salad, Fried or Grilled Chicken Sandwich, BBQ Ribs, Fish & Chips and much more for its lunchtime lineup. Customers can stay and enjoy their meals on Golden Gate Bistro’s outdoor patio, order online for to-go orders or can get delivery via Doordash, Uber Eats or Grubhub.

Chef Victor also has some other plans in the works, including launching a food truck “in the next month or so,” as well as a second bistro location in Richmond, hopefully near Kaiser, that he “hopes to open in a few months.”

“People are liking our food,” said Chef Victor, a Richmond resident. “I want to bring jobs to the city.”

Golden Gate Bistro is offering a lineup of light music every Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. which has been enthusiastically received by the local crowd. This Sat., Alex Koford will perform and word on the street is that the bistro might be featuring future musical acts from some of Chef Victor’s “Terrapin Crossroads family.”

The bistro is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Sundays when it is currently closed. Check out menu selections and other info on its website and call 510-374-6393 or email [email protected] for more info.
