The driver involved in a solo-vehicle crash into a fire hydrant on John Muir Parkway in Hercules on Saturday was allegedly intoxicated and in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene and learned that a witness had reported seeing a male subject walking away from the crash scene in the direction of Safeway.

Officers responded to John Muir Pkwy for a vehicle crash into a fire hydrant. That person, an Oakland resident, was located near Alfred Nobel Drive, but “he ignored commands and ran,” police said.

The lone officer caught up to the suspect and detained him with help from a Taser. But he continued to resist until other officers arrived to help handcuff him.

“During the struggle, a pistol magazine loaded with .357 ammunition fell onto the ground and broke into pieces,” police said. “As a result, the unexpended ammunition from the magazine also scattered onto the ground. An unregistered Glock 33 with another loaded magazine was found in the subject’s cross-body bag.”

The suspect “smelled strongly of alcohol” and was booked into Martinez Detention Facility on DUI and weapons charges.

Members of the Pinole Police Department and Rodeo-Hercules Firefighters assisted on the incident.
