The suspect in a fatal shooting in Pinole was shot and injured by a police officer while fleeing the homicide Thursday afternoon, police said.
About 1:10 p.m., police were dispatched to a report of a disturbance involving a subject armed with a gun at a home in the 1100 block of Encina Avenue, police said.
While responding, officers learned a person had been shot and the suspect was fleeing on foot. After officers arrived and established a perimeter, the suspect confronted a Pinole officer and fired multiple shots at the officer, police said.
“The officer returned fire and struck the suspect,” police said.
The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital, where he is expected to recover, police said. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Officers meanwhile found a male victim in the home where the shooting took place, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The victim’s identity was not immediately known.
“The Contra Costa County Officer Involved Shooting protocol was initiated and the incident is being investigated jointly by the Pinole Police Department, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Contra Costa DA’s office,” police said.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to call 510-724-1111.
