A possible arson fire at the Hillside Nature Area in El Cerrito early Sunday is under investigation, police said.

El Cerrito Fire responded at about 5 a.m. to the blaze north of Moeser Lane, near the PG&E power lines and by the grove of Eucalyptus trees.

“The burned area was approximately 50′ by 50′,” police said. “The closest homes that could have been endangered were on Earl Court or Sea View Place.”

The blaze was extinguished by firefighters and there were no reports of injuries or damages to structures.

“Due to the cool and moist conditions, it seemed that the only way the fire could have started was an intentional human act,” police said. “However, there was no obvious evidence of an encampment or social gathering in the area. The fire is classified as an Arson and remains under active investigation. “

Anyone who has any information about this crime is encouraged to call the El Cerrito Investigations Unit at (510) 215-4400 or via email at [email protected].
