Contra Costa College’s student newspaper, The Advocate, continues to win awards for its reporting. Earlier this month, the program took fourth place in the Digital Newsletter category for two-year colleges at the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) Best of Show Awards in San Francisco.
The Advocate also won two Meritorious awards this month from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. The honors recognized the publication for Online General Excellence and Enterprise News Story/Series. The award for news series specifically honored the work of former managing editor Arianna Caramagno.
The recent wins build on the fact that in 2022, the ACP named The Advocate the most-awarded two-year media outlet in its history.
The ACP Awards celebrate top student journalism across the country in print, digital, broadcast, and yearbooks. Retired journalism advisor Paul DeBolt, who led The Advocate for 40 years, said that many people do not realize how hard students have worked since the 1960s to record campus history. He noted that it is vital for students to have a voice and report the truth.
