Norma Jean la Bat, a long-time resident and active member of the community, was honored at the conclusion of Richmond City Council meeting on Tuesday following her recent passing.

Councilmember Cezar Zepeda shared memories of la Bat, describing her as a “Richmond treasure” who was well known for her warmth and the way she made others feel cared for and seen.

La Bat lived in Richmond for many years and was especially connected to the south side of the city. She was highly involved in local issues and activism, often working to protect the city’s history and supporting causes she believed in, Zepeda said. Her professional career included roles at the UC Berkeley Extension and Kaiser in Oakland.

Aside from her work in the community, la Bat was known for her creative talents in ceramics and stained glass. Many residents remember her unique personal style, which Zepeda noted often featured bright scarves and her signature red glasses.

“I know that I can see her from a mile away, not just because of the red glasses, but her wonderful, friendly smile,” Zepeda said.

She was a dedicated mother and grandmother who considered her family to be the center of her life.

A memorial service for Norma Jean la Bat will be held on Friday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wilson & Kratzer. The family has also arranged a live stream of the service for those who wish to participate in celebrating her life from a distance.
