Richmond First United Methodist Church and the West Side Branch of the Richmond Library are hosting a free mental health workshop called “Fear: Our Friend and Fuel.”

The event takes place on Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. till noon at the library in Point Richmond. Dr. Hanna Song, a clinical psychologist, will lead a talk on how to understand and use fear in a healthy way. A free lunch follows the workshop from noon to 1 p.m.

To help with food planning, register by scanning the QR code on the event flyer (below) or by calling Jean Reynolds at (510) 734-3942. The organizers can meet some dietary needs, but guests with specific concerns may want to bring a personal lunch.

The church is also starting its spring holiday season this week. On Wednesday, commuters can stop by the Richmond BART Station from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for a quick blessing and ashes. Later that day, a joint service will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at Easter Hill UMC on Cutting Blvd.

On Thursday, Feb.y 19, at 6 p.m., Open Door UMC will host a soup dinner and a prayer program focused on supporting local children. If you plan to attend the dinner, email Doreen at [email protected] or Jean at [email protected] to RSVP.

Music fans can attend a concert on Sunday, March 1, at 7:30 PM at the church on 201 Martina St. The Town Quartet will play music by Russian composers and debut a new piece by local composer Dmitri Glickman. Tickets for this performance are $25.

These events lead up to the Easter holiday in April. A Good Friday service will be held on April 3 at 7 p.m. at El Sobrante UMC. On Easter Sunday, April 5, Richmond First UMC will hold a garden service at 8 a.m., a breakfast buffet at 9 a.m., and a sanctuary service at 11 a.m. The day ends with an Easter egg hunt for children at 12:15 p.m.

Looking ahead to the summer, the church has scheduled its Vacation Bible School for Aug. 3 through Aug. 7. The program runs every morning from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and ends with a group lunch on Friday.
