Alten Construction, which has called Richmond home since 2003, recently hit a major milestone by finishing its largest project ever. The firm just completed the Dr. David Wain Coon Center for Student Success at the College of Marin, a project worth $86 million.
The 86,000-square-foot facility serves as a one-stop shop for students on the Kentfield Campus, featuring a library, career center, cafe, computer labs, study lounchesa nd event and outdoor spaces. The project wrapped up in December 2025 after four years of work.
The project was finished in time for the college’s 100th anniversary.
Alten Construction originally started in 1995 in the basement of its founders’ home and has grown into a major Bay Area contractor. The company employs its own carpenters and laborers and specializes in public buildings like schools and fire stations. When the company moved to Richmond in 2003, it was located at 720 12th St. In 2017, the company moved its headquarters to 1141 Marina Way South in the city’s historic Marina Bay neighborhood.
“This [College of Marin] project was incredibly meaningful to our entire team,” said Bob Alten, co-owner of Alten Construction. “From the earliest design stages through construction during unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID and rising material costs, this project tested us all. What I’m most proud of is how our construction team, the college, architects, construction managers and subcontractors came together, stayed aligned and delivered the project on time and on budget.”
College officials praised the partnership, stating that the new hub will benefit students and the local community for decades to come.
