After nearly two decades of leadership, Fire Chief Lewis Broschard has announced his retirement from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, effective March 30. His departure marks the end of a 29-year career in the fire service and a transformative tenure for the district.
During his time as chief, Broschard oversaw historic organizational growth, including the successful annexation of the East Contra Costa and Rodeo-Hercules fire districts and the establishment of a service contract with Pinole. The district’s capabilities were modernized through the launch of an aerial firefighting helicopter program, a new firefighting hand crew, and the rebuilding of several fire stations. He is also credited with significantly improved the district’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating to a uniform Class 2/2Y, a move that enhances safety and reduces insurance costs for the community.
“Serving as fire chief has been the greatest honor of my career,” Broschard stated. “I leave knowing the district is positioned for continued success.”
Board Chair Diane Burgis praised his dedication to resident safety through historic wildfire seasons and complex expansions. The district, which serves over one million residents across 582 square miles, will announce the selection process for the next fire chief at a later date.
