Richmond firefighters battled a single-alarm blaze that broke out at the old, vacant Terminal 1 building at the end of Dornan Drive and Brickyard Cove Road on Wednesday, April 23.
According to Richmond Firefighters Local 188, the union that represents city firefighters, Engine 61 arrived first at the scene to find smoke and flames coming from the large structure.
“With the assistance of additional crews, the flames were quickly brought under control and contained to one section of the building,” Local 188 stated. “Members remained at scene for an extended period of time ensuring all hot spots and embers were completely extinguished.”
Richmond police Chief Aaron Osorio said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the city Fire Marshal. The structure was damaged on southwest corner of the building.
In total, four fire trucks, two ladder trucks and two battalion chiefs responded to the fire. A total of 22 firefighters were at the scene, with mutual aid coming from both Con Fire and the El Cerrito Fire Department.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Terminal 1 encompasses about 13.8 acres of shoreline property formerly used as a port terminal by the city. Port operations were curtailed in the 1980s and attempts to redevelop the site have yet to materialize despite years of planning.
