Trained canines and canine handlers are being added to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Contra Costa Fire) to support fireifghters and other staff with the stresses of the job.

“Firefighters can experience unique stressors beyond what most understand and these events can be impactful for years,” Contra Costa Fire officials said in a statement.

Two peer support canines will be introduced during an event at Fire Station 2 in Pleasant Hill on Monday. During the event, a swearing-in will also occur for Contra Costa Fire’s fire investigation dog and search and rescue task force dog.
