A homicide that occurred Monday, Dec. 29, at an IHOP restaurant in the Hilltop District is being linked to a self-inflicted shooting in San Pablo the following day.

Coworkers found the victim inside the IHOP on the 3400 block of Klose Way with an apparent head injury, according to news reports. Emergency crews responded about 1:43 p.m. Monday and attempted to revive the victim, but he died at the scene. Police were summoned to investigate, as the injury did not appear accidental.

The following day on Tuesday, San Pablo police officers responding to an unrelated call were approached by a 44-year-old San Pablo man identified as a person of interest in the IHOP homicide, who also reportedly worked at the IHOP. Communication was limited due to a language barrier, and the man walked away from officers. Moments later, officers heard a single gunshot near the San Pablo Police Department parking lot and found the man with an apparent self-inflicted wound. He was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.

Richmond police homicide detectives traveled to San Pablo to assist with the scene. No charges have been filed, and authorities have not released the identities of the homicide victim or the person of interest. The investigation into the Richmond homicide and the San Pablo incident remains active and ongoing.

Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the San Pablo Police Department at 510-215-3150 or the Richmond Police Department.
