Chevron pedals with purpose at ‘Bike the Bridges’ fundraiser
The Chevron team poses at the 2025 Bike the Bridges event.

It started with a conversation between coworkers and turned into a movement on wheels.

Each year, a growing team of Chevron Richmond employees trades hard hats for helmets to take part in Bike the Bridges, riding together to support Special Olympics athletes across Northern California.

The event, which starts in Martinez and spans the Carquinez and Benicia bridges, draws cyclists of all skill levels to support programs that empower Special Olympics athletes across the region.

The Chevron Richmond team first joined the ride in 2023 after refinery operator Cesar Garcia suggested forming a company team. His enthusiasm quickly caught on with colleagues, including fellow rider Amanda Hernandez, who helped organize logistics and secure Chevron-branded cycling jerseys.

“Cesar came to me and said, ‘What if Chevron put a team together?’ And it just took off,” Hernandez said.

Chevron participants earned the Team Participation Award at the 2023 event.

In their first year, Chevron’s team not only completed the ride but also earned the Team Participation Award for its size and contribution. The following year, Chevron was recognized as both the largest team ever to participate and the top donor to the event.

Hernandez said the team’s motivation goes beyond cycling.

“We’re passionate about supporting Special Olympics athletes,” she said. “Seeing their determination and joy reminds us what community and teamwork are really about.”

The annual event has also built stronger bonds among Chevron Richmond workers from different departments. Riders of all skill levels, some first-timers, others experienced cyclists, travel the scenic 25-mile route together, often pausing along the way to make sure no teammate is left behind.

“It’s not a race, it’s about the journey,” Hernandez said. “You look ahead and behind, and all you see are Chevron jerseys. It fills you with pride.”

This year’s ride even featured a unique participant: one rider completed the route with his dog, Jelly, along for the ride in a backpack.

As Hernandez put it, “It’s incredible to see how something that started as one operator’s idea has grown into a company tradition that unites us, and supports such an inspiring cause.”
