Contra Costa County families can now access up to $1,500 in CalKIDS program scholarships.

The initiative launched by the State of California in 2022 and administered by the ScholarShare Investment Board recently allocated about $44 million in scholarships to eligible students within the county.

Nearly half of all public school students in Contra Costa County are eligible for up to $1,500 in scholarships. Specifically, students in grades 2–12 identified as low-income or English learners can receive $500. Those in foster care are eligible for an additional $500, and students experiencing homelessness can receive another $500, totaling up to $1,500 per student.

These scholarships can be utilized at accredited colleges, universities, community colleges, and career training programs nationwide. Eligible expenses include tuition, fees, books, school supplies, and computer equipment. Funds are invested until the student is ready to pursue higher education, potentially increasing the scholarship’s value over time.

“These funds aren’t just dollars, they’re an investment in our children’s dreams and in California’s future,” California State Treasurer Fiona Ma said. “Every child deserves both the belief and the support to make their dreams real.”

To claim a scholarship, families can visit CalKIDS.org, where they can confirm eligibility and access their accounts. For students, the process requires the Statewide Student Identifier (SSID), date of birth, and the county where the student was enrolled. For newborns, the Local Registration Number (LRN) from the birth certificate, date of birth, and county of birth are needed.

For additional assistance, families can contact the CalKIDS program at (888) 445-2377, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST.
