Richmond is inviting local poets to apply to become the city’s next Poet Laureate for a two-year term through 2027. Applications opened on June 6 and will be accepted until July 15, 2025 at 11:59 p.m.

The selected poet will receive a $3,000 stipend over the course of their term and will serve as an artistic ambassador, representing Richmond through poetry, public appearances, and community engagement.

Richmond launched the Poet Laureate program in 2012. The Poet Laureate will be expected to write and share original poems at city events, visit schools and libraries, participate in National Poetry Month and Arts and Humanities Month celebrations, and contribute to Richmond’s civic and cultural life through the power of language. At the conclusion of the term, the Laureate will submit a written reflection to help guide and improve the program for future participants.

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 19 years old, reside in Richmond, and demonstrate a strong history of poetry writing and community involvement. Applicants should also show evidence of publication—either professional or self-published—and possess strong writing and public speaking skills. Current or former members of the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission (RACC) or Public Art Advisory Committee, as well as past Poet Laureates, are not eligible.

The application must include a completed Poet Laureate form, a resume, up to five pages of poetry samples, two personal and two professional references, proof of Richmond residency, and a signed statement confirming availability for the two-year term. All materials should be submitted via email to [email protected] — again no later than July 15, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. A sub-committee of the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission will review submissions, conduct interviews, and make a final recommendation. The next Poet Laureate will be officially confirmed in September 2025.
