An attempted carjacking in Richmond led to a police standoff last week and the eventual arrest of one suspect.

The incident unfolded Tuesday morning when police received a report of three suspects trying to steal a car from a victim near Pierce Street and Central Avenue.

The victim fled before his vehicle could be taken. Officers responded and located three suspects that matched the victim’s description.

“The suspects fled, with one escaping into a residence,” police said. “Officers could see people inside the house who refused to come out. Due to a firearm being used, the RPD SWAT team responded. Once a search warrant was secured, RPD SWAT cleared the residence. One person was arrested, and two were detained.”

The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office supplied an armored rescue vehicle for the operation.
