A free after-school homework assistance program in Richmond might soon see expanded funding to ensure services at a sixth city location: the Nevin Community Center.

Richmond Public Library re-booted the after-school tutoring program in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and began offering drop-in after-school tutoring at five library sites: Richmond Main Library, Bayview Branch Library, West Side Branch Library, May Valley Community Center and Shields-Reid Community Center.

The Milpitas-based Bay Area Tutoring Association (BATA) helps operate the program and provides the tutors. The program was well-received by city staff and a tutor was requested for the Nevin Community Center. That was achieved by shifting one tutor from the Main Library.

Now, city staff aim to increase the contract for the tutoring program to ensure after-school tutoring will continue at the Nevin Community Center in the coming years.

At the City Council meeting this Tuesday, the city will request approval for adding $66,000 per year for the final two years of the three-year contract, which would total $682,000 over the three fiscal years.
