A man is suspected of firing into a car carrying children during a child custody exchange in Richmond on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 3500 block of Nevin Avenue around 6:50 p.m., police said.

After an argument occurred during a child custody exchange, the suspect allegedly fired a handgun as she was fleeing in a vehicle with her three children. Two of the children are under 2 years old.

The gunfire struck the victim’s vehicle but none of the occupants were injured.

Responding officers soon located the suspect in the 3600 block of Barrett Avenue. He fled on foot and hid in a house crawl space before K9 Cash located him. A police perimeter and drone were used during the search for the suspect, police said.

The suspect is facing charges of attempted murder, child abuse, violations of a restraining order, domestic violence, and possession of a stolen and loaded firearm, along with several other misdemeanors.
