A driver suspected of fleeing an over 100-car sideshow in Richmond on Saturday was arrested after his vehicle nearly struck an occupied police car, according to the Richmond Police Department.

The incident unfolded when police responded to a sideshow of about 50 vehicles in the area of Klose Way and Blume Drive around 1:40 a.m. After officers dispersed the group without any arrests or citations, they were then called about 20 minutes later to the area of Harbour Way South and Cutting Boulevard, where a sideshow of about 100 vehicles was taking place, police said.

While addressing that sideshow, officers followed one of the vehicles involved to the dead end of Harbour Way South, where they attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle, however, rapidly accelerated and drove directly at an officer’s car on the wrong side of the road, police said.

“The officer had to swerve out of the path of the vehicle to avoid colliding with it,” police said.

Officers pursued the vehicle to the area of Bayview Avenue and I-580, where the car stopped and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

The driver was booked on charges that include assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, as well as felony evading. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

No officers were injured in this incident or the main sideshow, and no other arrests or citations were issued, police said.
