A celebration for the Richmond Main Library’s 75th birthday is scheduled to take place from 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15.
The event will feature music, cake, a slideshow and brief talks on the history and the future of the Main Library building at 325 Civic Center Plaza, which is set for renovation.
While the Richmond Public Library system dates back to 1907, the Main Library was opened to the public in its current location in 1949. The building was part of an architecturally celebrated Civic Center that was created following the city’s boom in population during WWII. It was the first glass-walled library building in the country. Today, the Main Library is the subject of an ongoing $15 million modernization project.
