The 15th Annual Spirit & Soul Festival is coming to Downtown Richmond on Oct. 14 with live music, art, a classic car show, kids zone, food and much more.

Among the “much more” is a major — and free — community chess event during which participants will have a chance to take on the “Black Knight of Richmond” for an opportunity to receive some free swag.

The Black Knight is T.C. Ball, founder of the West Coast Chess Alliance who has been methodically growing enthusiasm for the game of chess in the local community via events in public spaces like community centers, parks and festivals.

Ball will host the 4th Richmond Community Chess Festival’s National Chess Day celebration at the Spirit & Soul Festival.

“This is a free community chess event; pre-registration is highly recommended,” Ball said.

Schedule for the community chess event:

On-site Registration: 10–11am

Bug House: 11-12pm

Bug House is an outrageously fun team quick (5 minutes) game in which one partner plays White and the other plays Black. As a player captures an opponent’s piece, that captured piece is passed to the partner. The partner can either make a regular chess move or place any one of the pieces passed by the partner anywhere on the board.

Quad Tournament (G30) non-rated: 12-3:00pm

Rounds: 12pm; 1pm; 2pm

Trophy presentation to Quad winners at 3pm.
