The City of Richmond Arts and Culture Division is seeking applications for the city’s next Poet Laureate.

The Richmond Poet Laureate is appointed to a term of two years, beginning July 2023 and ending June 2025. The deadline to apply is June 12.

Richmond awarded its first Poet Laureate prize in 2012. The most recent Poet Laureate selected in 2021 was David Flores, a poetry teacher and lead trainer for the Mindful Life Project.

The Richmond Poet Laureate’s purpose is to enhance appreciation and dissemination of poetry in the City of Richmond. Duties include writing poems for specific purposes and occasions, such as during National Poetry Month, giving readings at special events and visiting schools, public park events and city meetings.

The most qualified candidates have been professionally published in at least one poetry publication or book, and feel passionate about reaching and celebrating poetry in a community setting.
