Residents of Richmond, Hercules, Pinole, San Pablo, El Cerrito and unincorporated West Contra Costa communities are now eligible to bring up to three mattresses or box springs per month to the West Contra Costa County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility in Richmond at no cost, according to the City Manager’s latest newsletter.

The Free Mattress Drop-off Program allows residents to bring the items to be recycled at 101 Pittsburg Ave. in Richmond from Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proof of residency is required and can include ID or a utility bill.

What isn’t accepted: half mattresses or box springs; excessively wet, damaged, partial or soiled mattressess or mattresses with bed bugs; car beds; fold out sofa beds and futons; waterbeds; air mattresses; sleeeping bags; pillows; mattress toppers; or other furniture.

Additionally, mattresses and box springs are accepted in the bulky item curbside pickup for single-family and duplex homes.
