Richmond police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred at a gas station Tuesday that claimed the life of 21-year-old Derrick McDougal.

Officers responded to the area of 23rd Street and Barrett Avenue following a Shotspotter gunshot detection activation at about 8:44 p.m., Richmond police Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said. A 911 call also came in informing police there was a person shot in the parking lot of a gas station.

McDougal was found suffering from multiple wounds at the gas station at 2230 Barrett Ave., Pomeroy said.

No arrests have been made nor suspects named, but officers are working on active leads, Pomeroy said. Police believe the shooting, which marked the second homicide in Richmond this year, was targeted.
