Residents will be able to safely dispose of prescription medications and vaping cartridges at a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event held at five locations in Contra Costa County, including Richmond.

The Take Back Day will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the West County Detention Facility at 5555 Giant Highway; at 1980 Muir Road in Martinez; at 9100 Brentwood Blvd. in Brentwood; at Danville Police Department at 510 La Gonda Way; and at the Orinda Police Department at 22 Orinda Way.

“The DEA cannot accept needles or sharps, only pills, patches, and liquids sealed in their original container,” the sheriff’s office said. “Vaping cartridges and devices with batteries removed can be accepted at Take Back collection sites. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.”

The national event aims to provide “a safe, convenient, and ecologically responsible method of prescription medication disposal while also focusing on prevention and education,” the sheriff’s office said.
