Richmond police ID victim killed in triple shooting as Lamonta Butcher

Richmond police have identified the victim who died in a triple shooting late Friday morning as 29-year-old Lamonta Butcher, a popular rapper known as Tay Way.

Butcher, who posted his location on Instagram before the incident, was fatally shot just before noon at 4th Street and Macdonald Avenue, police said.

Officers responded to a Shotspotter activation of 17 gunshot rounds. They arrived on scene and located numerous shell casings on 4th Street and in the 300 block of Macdonald Avenue, police said. Officers located three victims inside the 4th St. Market at the corner of the intersection.

Butcher was pronounced dead at the scene. A 50 year old Richmond man and 31-year-old Hercules woman were transported to trauma centers in stable condition, police said.

Richmond police detectives are following up on numerous leads. No arrests had been made as of Friday evening.

Butcher’s death was Richmond’s 15th homicide of 2020. News of his passing quickly flooded social media and soon drew national media attention.
