An annual 5K run in Richmond that raises funds for local youth is going virtual this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing participants to run the event in the location of their choice.
Moving Forward, a community organization formed four years ago that aims to enhance resources in academics, health and community services for young leaders in Richmond, is set to hold its virtual 4th Annual We Run Richmond 5K on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m.
The event will kick off live on Moving Forward’s Instagram page. Its goal is to raise enough funds to purchase at least 200 backpacks filled with school supplies for Richmond elementary school students, along with $10,000 in scholarships to local, college-bound students.

In addition to this event, Moving Forward hosts community service events like park clean-ups and leads outdoor activities that promote active lifestyles.
“We are not afraid to get our hands dirty,” said Arleide Santos, communications and marketing director, Moving Forward. “It’s about proving that we as a community can support our own young people and build each other up for success. Our project is for the community by the community and in the community.”
Anselmo Ramirez, project manager for Moving Forward, added that the organization’s scholarship program is a “long term investment in our community.”
“As we plant seeds to uplift and empower, the Moving Forward team grows stronger, extending our reach and positively impacting many lives along the way.” Ramirez said.
For Richmond area students who are interested in applying for The Moving Forward Scholarship Program, the deadline is Sunday, June 14 for the Fall 2020 – Spring 2021 academic school year. To apply for the scholarship, click here.
Scholarships will be given to several applicants in the amounts of $500, $1,000 and $1,500.
