Over 30 citations were issued Thursday in an operation targeting speeders and distracted drivers on Richmond Parkway and San Pablo Avenue, police said.

Numerous drivers also received warnings during the traffic enforcement operation that mainly occurred in the Hilltop area from about 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to Richmond police Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy.

“The operation was a result of community complaints regarding speeding and overall careless/reckless driving,” Sgt. Pomeroy said.

The shelter-in-place period has resulted in fewer vehicles in the roadways and prompted an increase in speeding, which has led to an increase in speeding citations during this period, the police sergeant added.

“No matter the time of day or night, the police department has been in the community continuing to enforce the traffic laws,” Pomeroy said.

On Tuesday, RPD also posted an advisory about drivers operating their vehicles to the point of recklessness, saying it has made about 10 arrests of suspects engaged in sideshow activity or other dangerous driving. Police said by law they can impound vehicles involved in such activities for 30 days. Residents can report reckless driving or sideshow activity to RPD dispatch at 510-233-1214 or can send pictures and videos of the activity via email to [email protected].
