A former Richmond High physical education teacher and soccer coach was sentenced to three years in state prison and will register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
The crimes by Israel Ayala-Lopez, 27, of Richmond involved multiple sexual encounters with a 15-year-old student from at least April 2019 until August 2019, prosecutors said.
The student reported the improper relationship to a school resource officer, leading to his arrest. Ayala-Lopez has been in custody since the DA’s office filed criminal charges against him.
A criminal protective order was also ordered by the judge to prevent Ayala-Lopez from communicating with the victim, prosecutors said.
