UPDATE: As of 9 p.m., the bridge has reopened in both directions.
Both directions of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge were closed Thursday morning after large pieces of concrete reportedly fell from the upper span to the lower span, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said football and golf-ball sized chunks fell, with one causing major damage to a vehicle about 10:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.
The lanes on both spans were closed between 11:20 to 11:40 a.m. In the early afternoon, one lane in each direction was opened. But the westbound lanes were later closed again due to more falling debris.
CHP said it is working with Caltrans to determine the problem and find a solution.
