New owners have taken over a highly visible restaurant space on 23rd Street in San Pablo that features an outdoor patio and entertainment.

On Feb. 5, Roberto and Veronica Garcia opened El Palenque at 1439 23rd St., near Pine Ave.

The eatery has opened in the space formerly occupied by the short-lived Ocotes Grill, which also served traditional Mexican fare. While the building in which the new restaurant operates still has the same owner — the Ledesma family — El Palenque is owned by the Garcias, who have their own chefs, menus and style.

“My family spend time together by working at the same restaurant for the last 15 years. Now that we just opened our own restaurant, we are excited to bring the most authentic Mexican fare to our community,” Veronica Garcia said.

At El Palenque, Chefs Primitivo from Oaxaca and Paola from Sinaloa dish up authentic sizzling platters of fajitas, savory birria, tasty barbacoa (BBQ), fresh mariscos, and their famous micheladas. The Garcias immigrated from Jalisco, which is famous for its seafood.

They along with the San Pablo Economic Development Corp. are inviting the community to a grand opening on April 16 from 2-4 PM. Please bring cash for tips and write a review online afterwards. RSVP is required to help them prep food. To RSVP, click here.

“We have a sunny outdoor patio, evening entertainment of mariachis and karaoke, and even handmade tortillas,” Veronica said.
