Urban Tilth will be distributing 450 free fruit trees at its “4th Annual Fruit Tree Giveaway” Sat., March 12 starting at 10 a.m. at three Richmond locations.
The fruit trees, which can’t be reserved, will be dispersed on a first-come, first-served basis until all the trees are gone, said the nonprofit. “Each household can pick up one tree, compost and root baskets to help the tree grow,” said the nonprofit in a statement. “Let’s celebrate spring with free fruit trees!”
Tomorrow’s fruit tree giveaway locations will be: 2000 Giaramita St., North Richmond (in front of Verde Elementary); 6th St. and Ohio Ave., Richmond Greenway (Community Gardens); and 16th St. and Ohio Ave., Richmond Greenway (Unity Park Community Plaza).
The tentative list of fruit trees to be given away will include: apple, persimmon, pear, peach, apricot, plum, mulberry, lime, lemon, Mandarin orange and blood orange.
The effort is closely aligned with Urban Tilth’s mission, which, per its website, aims to inspire, hire and train local residents to cultivate agriculture, feed our community and restore relationships to land to build a more sustainable food system.
